IBooks Now On IPhone 4- With Iphone New "Ratina Display" Crisp Resolution

'Antenna-Gate'' and the infamous ''death grip'' issue that has plagued the launch of Apple's iPhone 4 has distracted us all from a huge development the device heralds in the publication of text.

Its ''retina display'' renders text so crisply that I now find it depressing to read on any other screen.

The experience reminded me of the sense of wonder I felt at seeing the individual leaves on trees and crisp lines of chalk on the blackboard when I first wore glasses at age 11.

Apple says its retina display offers four times the pixel count and four times the contrast ratio of previous iPhone models, making it impossible for the human eye to distinguish individual pixels. At 326 78-micrometers-wide pixels per inch, as Apple puts it, the ''text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size''.

The display uses a technology called in-plane switching to provide a greater viewing angle than is usual for an LCD screen. Apple says this means you can hold the device ''almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture''.

So it is, just as Canberra's parks and gardens were so much more beautiful when I was able to see them clearly for the first time through specs.

The iPhone 4 invites you to download the iBooks app free the first time you enter the AppStore, and I suggest you do just that, then choose from its collection the gorgeous illustrated digital edition of Winnie the Pooh. Gaze at its sharply rendered illustrations in wonder, then compare the resolution with the same app and ebook on the iPad. The iPad rendition is just ever so slightly blurry, which I'd never noticed before. Download Ibooks Of Your Choice
