Analysis: $673K To Buy Apple's 250,000+ App Store Apps | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
It's been nearly four months since Steve Jobs' missive entitled, "Thoughts on Flash," where, in addition to a fairly scathing retort at Adobe's Flash platform, the Apple CEO noted that the company's App Store carried more than 200,000 applications at the time of the letter's writing.
Move over, old metric, because the App Store recently hit a quarter-million apps—all of two years and 49 days since the service's inception. And there's no indication that iPhone and iPad developers are slowing their efforts in any way.
After all, Apple just breached the 100,000 application mark on in November 2009 and leaped over the 150,000 barrier in February of 2010. It's been taking roughly three to four months for Apple to pile on 50,000 new apps or thereabouts, but this time window has shortened considerably since the service's birth in July 2008.
According to metrics by 148apps.biz, it took Apple around 11 months to achieve its first 50,000 active applications on the App Store. From there, the App Store ramped up quite dramatically and spit out an additional 50,000 in less than half the time, or approximately four to five months. It took around three months after that for the App Store to acquire 150,000 applications, and then roughly three additional months to jump from 150,000 to 200,000.
Assuming, of course, that the three-months-or-so growth rate stays constant, that puts Apple on track for hitting half-a-million active applications in 18 months, or right at the end of 2011 / beginning of 2012. Up until this point, the App Store has enjoyed approximately 323 new uploads for every day of its existence—that's not really an "average per day" amount, given the service's gradual ramp-up, but a fun statistic nevertheless.
An analysis of the App Store by 148apps.biz reveals—unsurprisingly--that applications outnumber games on the App Store by a ratio of 5.8 to one, or 200,000 active applications to 34,000 games. In actuality, more than 300,000 applications have been uploaded to the App Store throughout its existence. Nearly 50,000 of these are since inactive, or no longer available for download by users. As well, slightly more than 50,000 publishers are now counted as active contributors to the store.
And, for those curious, 148apps.biz revealed that—of the programs analyzed—it would cost a user around $673,362 to buy every single application and game in the store. This total includes the 83,000 applications and games priced at $1… as well as the five programs priced at $1,000. Slightly more than 74,000 applications and games are completely free.
Rumor: Possible “iPad Killer” (Folio 100) waiting in the sidelines
It looks like “Smart Pad” is just the moniker for Toshiba’s product category, claims Netbook Italia. The site published new renders of the iPad-like Android device, now dubbed the Toshiba Folio 100, as well as a dock with Toshiba branding. It also posted some new specs to boot. So let’s get down to business and find out if this truly is an “iPad Killer.”
As of now, we haven’t heard anything straight from the horse’s mouth, but based on the supposed specs, it’s shaping up to be a real iPad killer. It boasts some features (below) that the Apple tablet doesn’t have and most likely will never have, such as a USB port or external memory slots. There is no wording on price yet, but you can expect it to be in the general range of the iPad.
Features:
- Android 2.2
- NVIDIA Tegra 2
- 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 display
- 16GB internal memory
- 802.11b/g/n wireless
- Bluetooth
- 3G
- SD and MMC card readers
- HDMI
- USB 2.0 ports
- 1.3 megapixel webcam
- 1020mAh battery with 7 hours of mixed use (perusing the web, watching videos, etc.) battery life
As far as software goes, it has Opera Mobile as the browser, Flash 1.0, an e-book reader, and some general office productivity applications.
So there you have it, the Folio 100, in all its glory. Will this tablet be enough to knock the iPad down a few rungs on the ladder, or is it too little and too late? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

iPad lures business users in law, medicine and other fields
Apple's iPad tablet is being used by doctors, lawyers and businesspeople to ease their workloads, but many believe the popular touchscreen device can't yet replace a laptop for functions such as writing long documents.
The IT shop at Chicago-based law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal allows the firm's lawyers to use iPads, and up to 100 of the 800 attorneys around the globe are already doing so -- at their own expense.
"The iPad has real value for attorneys servicing our clients, of being able to access corporate data and document libraries immediately and [doing so] a lot quicker than on a laptop," said Michael Barnas, the firm's director of application services. "They take iPads and iPhones everywhere."
Traveling attorneys, especially, appreciate the fact that the iPad boots up faster than a laptop, he said.
But because many attorneys write long documents subject to many revisions, that work is still better suited for a workstation, he said.
A typical laptop at the firm can cost $1,500 to $2,000, while a low-end iPad goes for $499, so lawyers next year might be offered iPads instead of laptops, he said.
The firm currently gives lawyers a choice of a workstation or a laptop, but if they want an iPad, they have to purchase it themselves without reimbursement.
The firm's IT professionals have OK'd the iPad's security and manageability and can provide limited support to a road warrior having problems logging in, authenticating or using Citrix Receiver. But the IT department can't fully provide remote support for the iPad itself, Barnas said.
Sonnenschein did not allow lawyers to use the first versions of the iPhone. But with the second version, it was possible for IT to design and install security certifications for a second layer of password authentication, and it was possible to do remote wipes of data on iPhones that were stolen or lost. The iPhone 3GS allowed the firm to add Citrix Receiver for another level of security, Barnas said. In all, about 300 lawyers use iPhones, while the firm still supports about 800 BlackBerry smartphones.
All of the security and administrative capabilities added to the iPhone made it easier for the firm to accept the iPad, which uses the same operating system as Apple's smartphone, Barnas added.
Another professional who uses an iPad is Dr. Jon Wahrenberger. A cardiologist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., Wahrenberger said he and four other cardiac surgeons use iPads. The iPad offers a "low profile" that doesn't seem intimidating to patients during exams, he said.
But the bigger value comes from the fact that he's able to use his iPad to interact with patients' electronic health records -- functionality made possible by an app from Epic called Haiku, Wahrenberger said. He said his medical center also recently completed installation of a Microsoft Exchange server with extensions to the iPad.
"There's huge excitement for this stuff," he said. "People are loving it."
Still, experts such as Ted Schadler, an analyst at Forrester Research, have noted that several things must happen for the iPad to gain more acceptance as a business tool.
For one thing, Schadler said in a recent blog, Microsoft needs to build apps that create and edit common documents across platforms like the iPad. He noted that he has used Keynote to make a presentation, but he would rather use PowerPoint on his iPad. "Until we get that, the iPad will never replace a laptop," Schadler wrote.
He also said that the iPad needs a Bluetooth-enabled mouse, in addition to the already-offered Bluetooth-enabled keyboard.
Generally, Schadler wants to see many more business apps for the iPad. About 500 of the more than 11,000 iPad apps are focused on business uses, including Citrix GoToMeeting and Cisco WebEx, he noted. "But until we get access to corporate applications, employees will still have to lug around their laptops," he said.
Despite those reservations, Schadler said via e-mail that he personally knows of "dozens" of businesses that are testing the iPad, since their IT shops want to be ahead of the curve for their users, instead of behind the curve, as they were with the iPhone.
The iPad has the "same security model and administrative model as iPhone, so they've done due diligence on that already," Schadler added.
Health care provider Kaiser Permanente has reportedly been testing two iPads for viewing X-rays. And Mercedes-Benz Financial has reportedly equipped some car dealerships with iPads so sales personnel can take customers' information for credit applications without having to sit down at their desks. Officials at both companies did not respond to requests for further comment.
Schadler outlined three scenarios for business iPad uses. One is for salespeople in the field who want to scroll through slides or demonstrate a Web site. Another is for executives on short trips who don't need full laptops but might use iPads to do things like access their e-mail, calendars or Keynote slides. The third scenario is for doctors, retail sales staff, warehouse workers and other people who need access to applications while on their feet.

IBooks For The iPad – How To Get Maximum advantage?
Indeed it is actually right now possible for you to download eBooks for the iPad. Yes there are solutions available which enable anyone to download countless numbers of eBooks for the iPad.
Almost certainly one of the most in demand features of your iPad- apart from the multi-orientation interface, is its accessibility to many thousands of apps. These kind of applications are specifically made to perform on the apple iPad; there is actually zero possibility to find this anywhere else, apart from on the iPhone and also iPod Touch. The apps cater to many groups, including entertainment, business, games, education, and sports. Basically everything you can think of was equipped for by The apple company technicians and third-party developers. No matter your desire, there’s an iPhone app for that.
A particular necessary application available for the iPad is an e-book for iPad reader known as iBooks. The dimensions of the iPad screen is ideal for reading; there isn’t any squinting necessary to view words displayed on this reader. The majority of the technical elements in relation to the readability of the material can be fine-tuned including its brightness, text specifications, font, together with background. Your background light can be dimmed in line with the user’s preference and this is especially great for reading after dark because nocturnal reading will become intolerable if your screen is just too bright.
Furthermore, text size and also typeface styles can be altered to accommodate the owner’s requirements. For some strange reason, everyone has quirky tastes with regards to typeface designs. There are people who simply could not stand either Times New Roman or Arial; usually, they think it’s simple to read huge blocks of text displayed in Helvetica or maybe Palatino Linotype. Text adjusting is certainly very good news for those who plan to read lengthy books.
One more great feature of the eBooks iPad iBooks app is the facility to be able to render excellent graphics. iPad’s crisp display as well as high-speed memory allows images show up as you read it while not watching for the picture to finish. This makes graphic novels along with illustrated publications much better appreciated.
That brings to mind, Marvel Comics possesses his own e-book reader app on the iPad, this means the Marvel experience is easily accessible using a simple download! The images may be enlarged or even reduced simply by pinching on the multi-touch screen. It is additionally easier to navigate and browse the pages of Marvel’s comic books by tapping the actual thumbnails.
In keeping with additional reading, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times also have created an app exclusively for the iPad. Although it’s not precisely an incredible alternative for the actual broadsheet paper, this gives as effortless, “tap-worthy” access to information as you may need it.
These kinds of applications can be obtained within the not-so-subtly named marketplace App Store, which can be accessed with a specialized app on the iPad. iBooks has already been contained in the product once you purchase it, although the Marvel Comics app can be purchased within the App Store or through Amazon. At the moment, Amazon still hold the record of offering more and better titles more than any other e-book vendor. The user has got the choice to preview the actual books or perhaps comics prior to purchasing and as a fortunate iPad owner, you may also buy Marvel Comics in print to increase your own collection.
If you want to download Ipad Books, Then this resource is higly recommended.

IAds mooted for iPad books
iAds could be the latest Apple buzzword with a new report suggesting adverts could feature in iBooks.
CNet, quoting a story in the Wall Street Journal, does not give a timescale for the introduction of the adverts. However, it says the ads will be based on the account habits of the iPad owner, based on everything they have purchased, downloaded, read and played.
It reported: "With the amount of information Apple has on the purchasing habits of iTunes account holders, iAds represents the most dynamic way for publishers to reach an e-book audience that has (so far) been lucky to avoid the advertisement monsoon currently engulfing television, movies, and games."
Ibooks Download Websites
As I was seeking ibooks download internet sites, I found many ibook download websites which are offering unlimited Apple Ipad Ibooks downloads including novels, newspapers, comic books, and more.
But I saw they offer money back warranty too, So I thought why not let me try it and find all by myself. I paid a one time membership fee.
I instantly got access to their database, they sent me the login details. I was completely impressed with their collections novels rating from bestsellers, classics, mystery, thriller, crime and romance, hundreds of superhero action, manga, anime, and comedy comic books, access to newspaper sites from around the world. I just linked my ipad to the internet and merely started directly downloading all my favorites….
I thought my ipad is going to be my grand companion on my 2.5 hour daily commute to my workplace by train. That was an unbelievably fast & simple download.
Rather than having to face the incommode of paying fifteen dollars on iTunes per book, you access thousands of texts from the comfort of your very own home for a one-off upfront payment (One time membership fee cost me$49.95, which works out to just 0.2 cents per ibooks download…but you’ll get more & more value as my pad media library is ever growing and new titles are added regularly…..
I would consider My Pad Media as ‘free’ rather…compare 0.2 cents Vs $14.99) The internet site also offers 60 day money back guarantee, so you don’t have to care about anything.
In Any Case, the prompt ibooks download makes this internet site especially appealing, as there will be no discouraging waits when you are desperate to read the next novel in a series! The website is clearly laid out with easy directions on how to download, anyone, even the least tech-savvy bookworm, can use my Pad Media.
iWork 4.0.4 Update Gives Consumers ePub Exporting, Easier Access To iBooks Self Publishing]
In terms of writers, it isn’t hard to find an individual who hasn’t at least pondered the idea of writing a book. Just the thought of all the fame associated with being on, say, the New York Time’s Bestseller List makes the idea quite enticing. In fact, high selling authors make it evident that writing a book is a more than viable way to make a living – and they have the fame and fortune to prove it.
However, while the idea of writing a book isn’t so bad, the thought of al the work that goes into actually getting a book published may be quite overwhelming. Not only is there the writing but there is proof reading, editing and of course, physically publishing – not to mention all of the marketing associated with successful book launches.
Once you get all of that out of the way, you’ll be lucky to even score a spot in brick and mortar retailers, if at all. However, technology is quickly making this entire process easier especially thanks to the emergence of eBooks. eBooks are digital copies of books that can be viewed on a computer, some mobile phones and most importantly eBook readers with the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad being just two examples.
The technology isn’t necessarily brand new, but the ecosystems created by such above mentioned devices are quite new. With Apple’s iPad, for instance, came the iBooks Store giving consumers easy access to a large digital library.
Thanks to this new technology, it is getting much easier for writers to self publish their content digitally. In fact, Apple has recently updated their iWork productivity suite to version 4.0.4 which includes the ability to export a Pages document in the ePUB format. the same format that Apple uses with their iBooks application found on the iPad.
If you’ll remember, Apple introduced an iBook Store application process for independent writers with one of the credentials being the ePUB format not too long ago. Now that iWork has the exporting feature added, it will be must easier for writers to get their content out of their head and into the store.
iBooks: iPad Application Walkthrough
The Apple iPad is a brand new tablet designed to bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops. Additionally, Apple is positioning the device to compete with dedicated eBook readers. Through the iBooks app, users can read and purchase books with ease. Watch out eBook readers, the iPad is coming, and it does much more.
Apple releases iBooks 1.1.2, addresses minor bug
Apple today released another update of its e-reader application, the iBooks. The update with version number 1.1.2, comes just four days after Apple released iBooks 1.1.1. Comparing the updates, there is a new line in the What’s New section of the application. “Addresses a minor issue when upgrading iBooks,” the last item reads. It is unknown what the exact issue was and Apple offers no details.
iBooks allows users to download and read books. iBooks includes the iBookstore, where users can download the latest best-selling books or their favorite classics – day or night. Users can browse their library on a beautiful bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages with a swipe or a tap, and bookmark or add notes to their favorite passages. iBooks is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.

"Enhanced" IBooks - Audio and Video Support Added to iBooks
Apple released an update for their iBooks app, bringing it up to Version 1.1.1. Normally such updates include a mundane list of bug fixes, however, the update notation offers one very intriguing update, audio and video support.
This update will be of particular interest to Textbook, STM (Scientific, Technical and Medical) and non-fiction publishers as it would offer a greater level of interactivity to their material. This update has me excited about the possibilities of what such a simple addition could bring to an area in the iBookstore which is currently rather lifeless.
The other updates are listed here:
- Double-tap an image within a book to view it in greater detail.
- Experience books that include audio and video.
- Enjoy substantial performance improvements when reading PDFs.
- Look-up definitions to English words inside books without a specified language.
- Addresses an issue that may have caused some book downloads to not complete.
- Includes many stability and performance improvements.

The iPad's one Achilles' heel is that in direct sunlight you will see a ton of reflection on the screen, and the screen which is back lit get hard to see. This is most notice able when videos with dark scenes.

The has been a lot of discussion about whether or not the iPad causes eye strain. Based on my own experience and the experiences of others who have tried the iPad, this is really a hit or miss thing. However, if you plan on making the iPad your next eBook reader, I would advise you to go test out an iPad at the Apple store first.

Media consumption was supposed to be the one thing that the iPad excelled at, and it does.
iBooks: iBooks is Apple's eReader that can be downloaded free on the iPad. It comes with a free sample of Winnie the Pooh. iBooks gives the readers a lot of options such as changing the text size or the brightness of the screen. iBooks does not have a huge selections of books yet, but it offers books in full color and the touch screen ui makes it fun to read.
Kindle: Amazon has made a dedicated app on for the iPad which always Amazon customers to access their eBooks or buy more from the Amazon store. The Kindle has about 340,000 more eBooks than Apple's own iBooks. You can now watch videos that are embedded in the eBooks.
Comics: I think that comics where made to be viewed on a tablet like device. The beautiful display of the iPad combined with the interactive touch screen makes reading a comic on the iPad almost more enjoyable than holding a physical copy in your hands. Marvel and DC Comics both have dedicated apps for the iPad where you can buy new releases. Japanese manga are slowly making their way to the iPad for those of you who are fans of manga.
Magazines: So far the magazines that have been released on the iPad have enjoyed huge success. Big names such as Time Magazine, GQ, and Wired have all made dictated apps for the iPad where you can download the latest edition. The magazine companies are really excited about the opportunities the iPad brings and are still experimenting with how they should deliver their content to their subscribers. The eMagazines still have a way to go with things such as ui and pricing, but you can expect them to get better with time.
Newspapers: The iPad is an ideal product for reading the latest news in the morning at the breakfast table or on a train on your way to work. USA Today, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and many more have already made their content assessable on the iPad.

Video
The iPad is an excellent device for looking at video's. There are many options of where you can get videos from. Off course you have iTunes which has a huge selection of videos that you can buy and upload to your iPad. With a paid subscription you can also access Netflix on your iPad and stream movies and shows. For you quick videos you can always head over to YouTube and watch movie trails or a funny clip.
Music
The way you access the music is a little different from the iPhone, but it is still simple and easy. Apple has simple merged its iPod functions into iPad. One of the strong points of the iPad is that you can create your playlist directly on the iPad without having to use iTunes.
Keyboard
The iPad keyboard is much bigger than the iPhone or iPod Touch virtual keyboards, and the extra room makes it a breeze to type on. Don't expect to be able to bang out a 10 page paper (although I've heard that it has been done) but for quick typing the iPad will get the job done.
Gaming
The gaming on the iPad is not for extreme gamers, but more so for the casual one. In fact, I've heard of dozens of people who haven't played games in years finding a couple that they really enjoy on the iPad. The iPad offers all of the classic board games such as chess and scrabble and you can even play multiplayer. Then there are games that were designed specifically for the iPad. These games are clever, challenging, addictive, and loads of fun. And did I mention cheap? Most games are free and none get more expensive then about $5.00.
IBooks Now On IPhone 4- With Iphone New "Ratina Display" Crisp Resolution
'Antenna-Gate'' and the infamous ''death grip'' issue that has plagued the launch of Apple's iPhone 4 has distracted us all from a huge development the device heralds in the publication of text.
Its ''retina display'' renders text so crisply that I now find it depressing to read on any other screen.
The experience reminded me of the sense of wonder I felt at seeing the individual leaves on trees and crisp lines of chalk on the blackboard when I first wore glasses at age 11.
Apple says its retina display offers four times the pixel count and four times the contrast ratio of previous iPhone models, making it impossible for the human eye to distinguish individual pixels. At 326 78-micrometers-wide pixels per inch, as Apple puts it, the ''text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size''.
The display uses a technology called in-plane switching to provide a greater viewing angle than is usual for an LCD screen. Apple says this means you can hold the device ''almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture''.
So it is, just as Canberra's parks and gardens were so much more beautiful when I was able to see them clearly for the first time through specs.
The iPhone 4 invites you to download the iBooks app free the first time you enter the AppStore, and I suggest you do just that, then choose from its collection the gorgeous illustrated digital edition of Winnie the Pooh. Gaze at its sharply rendered illustrations in wonder, then compare the resolution with the same app and ebook on the iPad. The iPad rendition is just ever so slightly blurry, which I'd never noticed before. Download Ibooks Of Your Choice

Interactive Children's Books
We have the technology to create a revolution in reading, and Matthew Talbot-Kelly is using it. He’s bringing interactive books to a new level with his company, ‘Moving Tales,’ breaking the PDF flip-page approach to books for the iPad.
Interactive video and audio allow the books to take on a life of their own. The first book, called ‘The Pedlar Lady of Gushing Cross,’ is a big taste of what’s to come from this upstart business. ‘Moving Tales’ has plans to release more interactive iPad books
in the future. Get Thousand Of IPad Books At Very Cheap Price
Interactive iPad Storybooks
The ‘Toy Story 3 Read-Along’ iPad app isn’t just a digital storybook, but an immersive interactive experience perfect for kids and adults alike. There is a virtual coloring book, 3D games and images, a number of 2D games, and two sing-along songs.
My favorite feature of the ‘Toy Story 3 Read-Along’ iPad app, though, is the ability to customize the voice for the story’s voiceover by recording your own. What a fun way to interact with your kids!
